Panasonic proceeds to innovate, adding more optical zoom capability while reducing the overall size. This MiniDV camcorder features a 24x optical zoom, ultra-fast 1.3-second start-up time, 8 MB SD memory card for digital stills, webcam capability, and color viewfinder. It likewise comes with a 3-hour battery, remote control, and editing software.

      Optics
The PV-GS15 is equipped with a 1/6-inch, 680,000-pixel CCD and 22x optical zoom It also features a 800x digital zoom that allows you to zoom in on unbelievable close-ups.

      Digital Stills
In addition to shooting video, the PV-GS15 may likewise capture digital still images up to 640 x 480 pixels–good for sending photos to friends and family over e-mail or posting to your Web site. They are stored to the Secure Digital (SD)/MultiMedia (MMC) memory card slot.
The Quick Start feature enables the PV-GS15 to get started taping 1.3 seconds after turning the power on so those unexpectedÊmoments wonÕt be missed.ÊAfter pressing the Quick Start button, the camcorder will fetch up the former settings that you were shooting with–even if they were manually entered.

The Soft Skin Detail function detects the dissimilar skin tones being recorded and softens the focus to manufacture a realistic blend.

      Other features include:

The image-enhancing MagicPix feature allows for rich videos beneath low-light conditions.

Digital Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS) helps take the jitter out of hand-held video recording and remunerate for unintentional hand and camcorder movement.

With up to 540 lines of horizontal solution and minimum color noise, MiniDV delivers a 2 percent clearer picture than analog camcorder formats. This is all delivered on a cassette that’s 1/12th the size of a popular VHS tape. I was trying to choose between the Sony DCR-HC20 and this model. Both retail for the same price and there were some reasons I chose this one over the Sony:
1. This camcorder has 24x zoom while the Sony has only a 10x zoom.
2. There were many reviews about the problems with the Sony’s touch screen especially when viewing it outside in broad daylight.
3. I have read some reviews that the included software with the Sony is very difficult to use and install.
4. The Sony camcorder has no photoshot button or memory card, the Panasonic has both. The Panasonic photoshot allows you to capture low-res (640×480) digital still pictures with the touch of a button.
5. The viewfinder on the Sony is Black and White; the Panasonic has a color viewfinder.
6. The Sony has an included 1-hour battery. This model has a 3-hour battery included instead.

It was for these 6 reasons I went with the Panasonic instead of the Sony. After using the camcorder now for 2 weeks I have found out some drawbacks that I previously did not know about:
1. The included software for the Panasonic can only be used to edit STILL images NOT movie images. If you want to edit the movie images you have to buy additional software and a firewire cable. Also be careful if you have Windows 2000 because the optional Panasonic movie editing software is not compatible with Win2K.
2. The Panasonic has no in-camera movie editing capabilities. You can dub the movie to VHS tape but that is about it. You cannot copy a VHS or VHS-C to MiniDV by using this camera as you can with the Sony model. Also, the Sony camera is able to control most VCRs in order to make editing easier if you don’t have a PC.
3. The supplied USB cable that comes with the Sony allows you to stream the movie onto a PC whereas the USB cable that comes with the Panasonic cannot do this. The Panasonic USB cable only allows you to copy the STILL images from the SD card or a STILL movie image, NOT the movie itself. With the Panasonic if I wanted to copy the movie to my PC and then burn a Video CD, for example, I would have to buy a firewire cable, and additional software. On the other hand, right out of the box the Sony can do this with the INCLUDED software and the included USB cable.
4. The supposed Panasonic 1.3 second “Quick Start” actually keeps the camera in “Standby” mode and uses quite a lot of battery power. I actually had this mode on for 4 hours and when I finally used the camera I was only able to shoot for 18 minutes before changing batteries. Be careful using this. In any case the camcorder comes on rather quickly without it.

Other than the 4 reasons mentioned above the Panasonic does have a lot of nice features such as the 24x zoom, the zoom mic, the MagicPix function, wind noise reduction and a Soft Skin Mode. I would say that overall I am pleased with the picture quality and sound of the movies I have made with this camera. For the price of this camcorder I would say it is well worth the money, provided you can live without the 4 things I have mentioned previously. If you are willing to spend an extra $100 you could buy decent Movie Editing software and a firewire cable, thus closing the gap on the two camcorders. Although, if you were going to spend another $100 anyway you could buy a Sony DCR-HC30 which has most of the features the HC20 lacks, such as digital still images and a color viewfinder; it still has a 10x zoom, but no camcorder is perfect, right?

94 of 96 people found the following review helpful.
Great first digital camcorder
By Randal Fernandez
This is the first camcorder I have bought in 10 yrs – my Sony 8mm finally died. I have had the camera about 1 month and have shot in various conditions and settings. Overall, I am extremely happy with my purchase, and have only a few nitpicky wishes. I don’t intend for this to be a long expert review, just my impressions to help you shop. Some comments:

VALUE: This is a great buy for price/performance. I think I got more than I paid for. I love features but I’m not rich enough to pay for perfection. I had planned on the $400-$600 range based on reviews, hands-on at Sears, etc. Sony has the night-shot (which I really would have liked) but I didn’t like the touch screen LCD. Canon 65/75/85 units did not seem as user-friendly to me.

Zoom: The 24x optical is SPECTACULAR. Turn the digital zoom off unless you are on a tripod and have very good full-spectrum lighting, then only 50x. Hard to hold still at 20x and above, even with stabilization. The variable speed zoom control is easy to use and easy to control the speed.

Sound: Built-in zoom mic picked up chirping of little birds over the sound of waves at the beach. Little to no motor noise. If you are shooting and talking, your voice is somewhat muddled. I’m sure an ext. mic would improve sound.

Picture: Colors seem very true to my non-expert eyes with default settings. Better (not just brighter) light makes better video. In imperfect outdoor light, colors not very saturated using auto WB. I will try some adjustments for clouds/fog or filtered sun. Auto WB mode is pretty good indoors, incandescent or flourescent. LED light is useful only within 4-5 ft depending on ambient light. There are 2 LED light modes, one with slower shutter and one with normal. LED can also be used with MagicPix, but I don’t think it would help much. MagicPix is for very slow scenes in low light, although zooming or motion may produce interesting psychadelic effects.

Controls: The new model no longer has the menu wheel; a menu button is placed inside the viewfinder door. You use a 5-key directional pad (which doubles as the VCR control) to navigate menus. Simple enough, but defintely a 2-handed task now – you cannot hold still enough to change menu options while filming. There is no one-button toggle to show/hide the date in your recorded video. Other than that, controls are intuitive and relatively simple. Zoom control is great. During VCR playback, zoom button controls volume from the tiny (but adequate) speaker. When playback is paused, zoom button acts as a single-frame jog wheel (nice feature, but slow). VCR searching is too fast for my taste, but still usable. In recording mode, there is a handy “check” button to review the last 2-3 seconds of video.

Photos: 640×480 good only for e-mail or monitor, otherwise worthless to me except in an emergency. The included 8mb SD card holds roughly 45 pix in fine mode. You can snap a photo live or from already-recorded scenes.

Ease of use: My wife is technophobic, so if she can operate it, it passes the test. She shot a few minutes of video using all automatic options and seems comfortable with it. I can fiddle with options when I choose, or shoot in auto if I want. Most people will be fine operating 1-handed. I was most comfortable using 2 hands, right hand close to right shoulder to minimize bending wrist backward. Boot-up time is very fast, 3-4 seconds without using quick-start feature, <2 sec with.

Battery: Included charger charged the battery in 1 hr 15 minutes, which lasts for almost 1 hour of shooting video, plus playing with features, light, playback, etc. I will get another battery sometime, useful for vacation or long events.

York
I was looking for a Camcorder in the $400-600 range and got the Panasonic PV-GS15. I chose the GS15 over the higher end Panasonic PV-GS55 or GS-120 models because of its higher optical zoom (24x vs 10x). Also, those other Panasonic models are “Ultra-Compact” and I find the GS15 compact enough already.

I also considered the Sony DCR-HC40 but was not happy with the 10x optical zoom limitation. Also the GS15 comes with a longer lasting battery than the Sony. The GS15 also comes with a remote control and both view screens are color.

I did consider a Canon (e.g., the ZR90) but found to many reader reviews about Canon camcorders in general complaining about motor noise coming through the microphone and also electronic problems with condensation. Also, Consumer Reports (“Consumer Reports Best Buys For Your Home 2004″) finds that Canons “are among the more repair-prone brands of digital camcorders”. In comparison, Sony & Panasonic models do well. I looked at JVC models as well, but again they are more repair prone.

I do not hear any motor noise on the GS15. I am amazed at how much sound it picks up. It makes you realize how much noise you “tune out” after you listen to a video taped outdoors. It seems to pick up sound equally well whether the person you are taping is talking or the person holding the camcorder is talking.

I am happy with the indoor video quality. This is my first camcorder though so I have no comparison. Keep in mind that the GS15 does not have a “Nightshot” feature like Sony and also that you CANNOT record short video clips to the memory card as you can with other camcorders (only photos).

So I feel that the GS15 is a great deal because it is actually $100-200 less in price than models that I was comparing it with. Overall, a great little camcorder that I hope will last for 10 years!

I’m a strictly family documentary person — most of my videos are done at home in poor light and using the widest angle settings.

This was my list:

mac iMovie compatible

light sensitivity (good images in dim home lighting at night)

analog to digital conversion w/ S-video I/O

reliable, tough – ideally made in Japan

wide-angle for images taken from 4-12 feet

quiet motor

warranty & service (1 yr base, 2 yr when extended by my AMEX card)

price comparisons include travel charger & extended life battery

image quality

focus capability – ideally a manual focus ring

16/9 ratio playback ok

sensor: 2mpix, 1/3.6 ccd

external mike jack

top loading

Overall the Optura 50 meets most of the items quite well. I think the indoor image quality is pretty good; better than the Elura 90. Not as light sensitive as my old SONY Hi-8, but it’s far smaller and lighter. This was my biggest concern, but I think the camera passes this one. The best results come with 3 CCD cameras with larger sensors — typically costing $3,000 or so.

Canon includes a ridiculous, worthless, still image camera. Sigh. (I have two fine Canon still cameras.) What a waste. They do, however, also include an S-video for higher quality analog I/O (you have to buy your own S-video cable though!). The 2005 Eluras now lack this feature (arghh).

The Optura 50 doesn’t have enough wide-angle range for my tastes (I still do 3/4 capture as my iMovie s/w expects that) but it does better than the Elura 90. It’s probably as good as one will get nowadays.

Mac OS X compatibilty is excellent. The manual is sparse but adequate. Digital passthrough is tricky to figure out (read the manual carefully) but it works well.

The camera is indeed made in Japan and it feels reasonably robust — as much as any competing device. The charger is compact, but I bought the reasonably priced very nice travel charger and an extended life battery.

19 of 20 people found the following review helpful.
Great feature-set and performance for the price
By Flashlight
The Optura 50 certainly isn’t perfect and there are any number of higher-priced cameras which outperform it. However, the feature-set and performance for the price make the Optura 50 an excellent value.

The automatic white balance on the Optura 50 is more easily fooled in difficult lighting than rival cameras so you may frequently find yourself manually choosing a white balance setting. It’s not a huge problem since the controls are easily accessed but it’s something to be aware of. Low-light is not this camera’s strong suit due to image noise.

A more serious issue is that a minority of units exhibit higher than normal tape transport noise. Several people including myself have had to exchange cameras that were much louder than they should have been. I haven’t heard of anyone who got two bad cameras in a row though.

Strengths:

Optical Image Stabilization (unheard of at this price-point)

Easily accessed controls

True, high-resolution 16:9 widescreen mode

Microphone-in port with manual audio level control (unusual at this price-point)

Accessory shoe (cold)

Tilting, extendable viewfinder

Weaknesses:

Other cameras provide a better image in low light

Automatic white balance could be both more accurate and more consistent.

7 of 8 people found the following review helpful.
one nice family minidv camera
By rob
i’m a mac user who wanted a family camera so i can input footage into the mac and edit the footage. after spending way too much time researching video cameras online and at brick & morter stores, i purchased the canon optura 50.

the optura 50 has firewire which is needed to have the footage transfered from the camera into a mac and have the mac edit software (imovie/final cut express/final cut pro) “see” the camera. this aspect has worked flawlessly.

the optura 50′s specs are decent. it has the largest chip size of any 1-chip camera. now u can graduate to a 3-chip panasonic but this generation of panasonics does not come with firewire (see above).

the optura 50 also has knobs and buttons to access menu settings. i much prefer this to the sony’s touchscreen menu system which maybe fine for setting up a camera but interferes with the camera when in operation.

the optura 50 also has jacks for an external mic and light. all camcorders at this level have so-so on-board mics so the ability to add an external mic is a cheap solution to an obvious problem. but not all camcorders have an external mic input.

the optura 50 produces quality video outside. its color rendition is excellent. indoors it pays to offer all 1 chip camcorders as much light as possible. when that is done, the canon optura 50 does as well as others in this price class. the kid’s birthday parties have been fine, bringing the dog home was great, a surprise party for a friend all caught on tape.

for the price and the results i’ve gotten, i’d buy the optura 50 again. just one person’s experience.

Gutierrez
Since I was a little kid with an 8mm film camera, I have tried in vain to make videos that had the look and sound of professional TV and movie productions.

I failed in many ways, many times. Sometimes due to my meager skills, sometimes due to the short comings of my cameras.
The Vixia HF G10 changes that. I can no longer blame my equipment.

Let me say now, I am not a professional video/film maker. I have had no formal training. My videos are for my own enjoyment, I record special moments and travels for myself and my family. I seldom display or publish videos on the Web.

I placed my order on Jan. 5th, the day of Canon’s new product announcement. Amazon was great, as usual, and kept my pre-order updated until the camera was released. I received it last week, and was immediately struck by the quality of the images.
So far, I have just been learning about the G10, and its features. I’ve made some stunning video studies of my flower and vegetable garden. Whether played back on the camera’s LCD screen, or on my big screen HD television, the images are sharp, clear, vibrant, and have the look of a professional documentary. In addition, the on camera microphones are far superior to any camcorder I’ve ever used. I have some large wind chimes near my garden and the playback of audio through my TV is astonishing. I have a Sennheiser MKE 400, but have not used it as yet, the on-camera sound is excellent.

What I like: Coming from a DV tape camera, the memory cards are the best thing since sliced bread. The ‘touch screen’ is very good. I did not think I would like it, but it is easy to use, responds well, and the menu system is somewhat intuitive. The Manual mode provides tons of recording and exposure options. In Programmed mode the camera will make several automated exposure adjustments as the scene or lighting changes. In Av mode the DOF control is excellent, and there are built-in ND filters available in Av mode that have already come in handy. I have not used Tv mode, but in full Manual the controls are easy to access and perform as well as my Canon EOS still camera.
Three modes of Auto focus and excellent, easy to use Manual focus. Zoom speed adjustment, very cool.
Cinema Mode: Sounds like a gimmick, works like a charm. The primary feature in Cinema Mode is a set of 9 filters for various cinematic effects. I like them all, and look forward to using them to highlight my scenes in my videos. It would be easy to over use these, I think. But the Nostalgic, Sepia, and Old Movie filters will surely get used, as will the Dramatic B&W. I’m thinking the Vivid would work on panoramic landscapes.
The whole memory card/built-in memory thing is wonderful. Transfer to a Win 7 PC is easy and fast. So far I’m sticking with the MXP 24P (true 1920 x 1080). It is the luxury I paid for, and I’m going to use it.

Things I don’t need: Still photos – nice but I have a great still camera. In camera editing and Decorations: just fluff to me. I guess these things have market appeal, but why does Canon add them to a camera aimed at the upper end video customer?

Things I don’t like: The initial impression that the G10 is a small, cheap-looking, plastic camcorder (I got over that when I saw how it performed). The shallow angle of the lens opening prevents adding after market wide angle conversion lens; apparently the only lens that currently fits is the very expensive Canon lens. The BP808 battery is small, and you need 2, or a larger BP819. There is no separate battery charger included, so you need one of those, too. The hot shoe is the Canon mini-shoe, so you need an adapter to use after market mikes or lights, or buy the expensive Canon accessories.

My still camera is a Canon 5D Mk2. It has fantastic video performance as well as awesome still image performance. I wanted the G10 to give me more flexibility for different situations; run-and-gun, handheld kind of stuff, ad hoc filming which I find difficult with the 5D Mk2.
That’s about all I can think of now. I would buy this camcorder again without hesitation. I would and do recommend it to anyone looking to take that next step up in video making.

I’ll try to post a short video soon, showing some of the images from the Vixia HF G10.

I had bought the Canon HF 100 a few years ago, and was fairly happy with it. It was nice, but definitely had its drawbacks. So, I started researching Canon’s new line for 2011 and was torn between the M40 and G10. Having the new CMOS Pro sensor was a must. Everything I read about the low light capabilities sold me. Basically Canon went with a smaller pixel count (exactly 1920 x 1080), which in turn makes the pixels larger and better in low light shooting. I originally bought the M40 and was very happy with it, but started to realize it wasn’t fitting all my needs. That went back, and I went with the G10. I have not looked back since!

People might wonder what the biggest difference is between the two, and the big ones in my opinion are the manual lens control, wide angle lens (makes a HUGE difference in my opinion), larger LCD (3.5 in. vs. 3 in.), color viewfinder, and dual recording slots that let you record to both sd cards at the same time. Boy, I wish I had this feature two weeks ago for my niece’s second birthday party. My sd card got corrupted while using the M40 and I lost her blowing out her candles and eating the first piece of cake. Now, if I had the G10, I would have had a backup of it recording to both slots simultaneously.

Image quality wise, I couldn’t be happier. The video quality just pops out and is silky smooth. I have made a couple videos with it and people are just in awe of the quality. I usually record in 60i because I like the smoothness. I know there are benefits of recording in 30p and 24p, but for home videos, I prefer 60i. Now if I was doing an amateur film, I’d probably go with the true 24p this camera offers. This camera has a lot of setting to meet your shooting requirements. I know a lot of people wish Canon included a 60p mode, but I honestly don’t see a reason for it, at least not now. Everything I’ve read about it, editing 60p is a complete nightmare. No thanks.

Speaking of modes, it does have an auto, manual, and cinema options. Manual of course gives you countless options, and cinema mode offers a variety of shooting preferences such as cool, vivid, dream, b/w, etc. You can search on youtube and see demonstrations of each.

One of the big selling points for me was the wide angle lens. Now I know you can always buy an optional attachment wide angle lens for the M40, but they add a lot of extra weight and in my opinion inconvenience of carrying around more equipment than necessary. I also think by the time you add in that cost to the camera, it’s not that much cheaper. I love having the wide angle lens built in and with me at all times. It’s truly something you get used to, and you won’t want to be without.

Build quality is exactly what I expect from any Canon product. Feels sturdy and should hold up to a lot of wear and tear. I’ve never had any issues with previous Canon products breaking on me, so I would expect the same from this one. I would say the only thing I don’t like on the newer Canons opposed to the older models is the touchscreen. It’s simply not as responsive as I would like. I’m probably spoiled on my iphone’s silky smooth touch controls. I guess it’s just something I’ll have to get used to. The only other feature I really miss from older camcorders is night vision. I don’t know why most companies got rid of this feature. I still bust out my old Sony SR45 for those occasions.

In conclusion, if you’re looking for an excellent prosumer camcorder with amazing low light, controls, and options, you won’t be disappointed with the HF G10. I’ve already ordered the DM-100 external mic (I like to do lots of outdoor shooting, so I need to eliminate the wind noise the best I can), and already have the VL-5 from my previous camcorder for better dark shooting. I think I’m set for almost all recording situations. I hope this was an informative review. Thanks for reading.

Platt
I guess I was one of the lucky few who was able to get this camera early. I got mine 2 weeks ago and have been nothing but impressed with it. Right out of the box and in a medium lit interior room the picture was superb. I got a chance to take it out in the field for a bit and am extremely happy with it. Full manual control, a focus ring, an awesome and absolutely beautiful touch screen, what more could you ask for?

I especially appreciate the dual SD card slots and the recording options there. There are certainly going to be times where you’ll want to record to 2 cards at once and that will come in handy. But the ability to also record to the internal memory and then copy the contents to one of the SD cards in the card slots is also a great option.

The other things that are not mentioned in a lot of the bullet points for this camera that I am impressed with include the waveform monitor and peaking meters which come in handy for the manual exposure and focus modes. It also does zebra stripes so you have many options to get the perfect shots without relying merely on what you see through the viewfinder or on screen. Also, when you focus, by default, it automatically magnifies the center of the screen so that you can tell exactly what is in focus. Of course that can also be turned off if it is not your preference.

It is not a very large or very heavy camcorder either. That was my only reservation at first because I tend to prefer bulkier and heavier cameras. However this thing is so perfectly balanced in the hand and so rugged feeling that I am not concerned at all with the weight now.

I ordered 2 64GB SDXC cards with mine and at full resolution video recording it is reporting around 14 hours of recording time. Awesome! I also purchased the BP-827 battery, though I had plenty of recording time out in the field with just the standard battery as well.

Hope that helps anyone who might be on the fence about buying this one. If you have a model from last year then you may not need to upgrade yet. But it was definitely time for me to ditch the tapes and upgrade from my Canon HV30 and I am glad I did!

Update – June 21, 2011

I was able to take this camera on a trip last month to San Francisco, Napa Valley and Carmel by the Sea. The footage is simply amazing – but I did notice a couple of issues that I want to share with others who might purchase this camera.

Issue 1) The camera uses “dynamic IS” for image stabilization by default in both auto and manual modes. It does not appear that you can change this in auto mode but you can in manual mode (and this is a prosumer camera so you shouldn’t really use auto mode anyway) and I highly recommend that you change this. Use “standard IS” instead because dynamic IS tends to give you a wobble effect around the edges of your video. Google it for this camera and you’ll see lots of youtube videos and threads on forums about it. It is a non-issue if you just stick with the Standard IS and we’re still waiting to see if Canon fixes this in a firmware update.

Issue 2) This is not as big of an issue but I did notice that there is a bit of vignetting going on with the lens that appears to be just when I have the lens hood on and at full zoom. It’s a shadow effect around the edges. I recommend just using the lens hood when you really need it and only when you know you won’t be zooming in full as much.

I still maintain the 5 stars at this point because these are little things that you can easily get around and the wobble issue could likely be fixed by Canon soon anyway. It is one of those things that you deal with as an early purchaser and I have no regrets about buying this camera regardless. The footage I have made with this camera so far is absolutely stunning!

Camera and video quality is good (not spectacular but perfectly acceptable for point and click stuff). The recorded images and videos can be reviewed on the screen, download to a computer, and/or displayed via the built in projector. The projector produces a good image from a few inches wide to up to 5 or 6 feet. You do need to dim the lights to see the projected image. The larger you display the image the darker you need the room.

The kids (teenagers) have used this a few times at parties and it was a big hit. I used it at Thanksgiving and it was fun for everyone to see the video together.

Battery life has been good – I’ve shot over an hour’s worth of video, 20 or 30 pictures and then displayed these via the projector all on one charge. The unit’s size and shape is OK, although a little on the large size for my younger teenage daughter. I had some problems with button sensitivity while holding the camera (zoon, etc) however there is a sensitivity setting which helps. There’s no flash, but there is a built in LED light. It’s very bright so don’t use it for “candid” photos, and it tends to make people squint when they look at the camera so don’t use it for straight on portraits!

Overall very satisfied.

Since my son is expecting a baby in a couple of months, I thought this would make a nice gift. Fortunately, the memory card from his still camera worked in this. Otherwise, he would have been limited to about 7 seconds of recording time until he was able to get one.

He had a great time recording the events at Christmas (he received it Christmas Eve). He was able to record and then show everyone what he had recorded without everyone having to gather around a tiny screen. It also took good stills. He was satisfied with the zoom, knowing these small recorders aren’t known for having great zooms. He said his one complaint was that it is a bit thick so it doesn’t fit into a pocket easily, but he realizes that if it were thinner, it wouldn’t have the projector. He said he does still want a “real” recorder, but this one will be great to keep in the diaper bag. The one complaint I found was that it is too easy to hit a button when it it handed to you. Those buttons look like a flat keypad and allow you to navigate through the different features. It must be pretty intuitive because my son doesn’t usually read directions.

I took a risk getting this camera (although I did save the receipt) because my son is very picky about his electronic devices. I think it was a hit.

Lee
I saw this 3M Shoot ‘n Share on The View and immediately went on Amazon and ordered three. One for each of my kids and one for me. My daughter has called me twice now asking where I got it as her friends want to get one NOW! It took me a little bit to figure it out but that’s because I don’t do well with instructions and just played with it until I knew how to work it. My kids, however, figured it out right away. It has a clarity that is amazing when projected on almost anything. It is very unique and certainly a fun video camera to have.

I am not a videographer or anything of the like, just an average consumer, looking for a nice video camera.

- Look & Feel
The first thing that struck me about the camera is the weight (or lack of it). The camera is very light almost to the point of feeling kinda plasticky (like a TV remote.) I suppose it could be a good thing for some but I prefer my electronics to have a bit of weight to them. I like the look of the camera it is very sleek and clean. The chrome accents really pop and look great.

- Video Editing & Conversion
The video editing is very easy and if you opt to store your data on an SD card it is a very quick process. The default folder structure is very easy to navigate to find the files and transfer them to your computer. The camera also has an attached USB cord in the handle so you don’t need and additional cords to retrieve your videos/pictures.

- Battery Life & Other Features
Battery life is OK not great, not bad just OK. On the highest video quality setting you will get about 120 minutes of filming which seems about right.
My biggest gripe about this camera is there is no power button. The camera automatically turns on and off when you open or close the screen. It is nice because you probably won’t need the camera on with the screen closed but I would prefer a power button anyways. There is a switch to open/close the lens cover though which is good thing. The camera also has several different video settings sports, indoor, ect. The camera does a pretty good job of automatically switching between them (if you have that feature on) and generally looks good in them.

- Video Quality & Lens
The auto stabilization feature does its job well and it makes the video look significantly smoother. Shooting varies depending on light conditions. Daylight and outdoor look great, very crisp but it’s indoors that’s my problem. Filming indoor with decent light is extremely grainy. There is a lot of noise in the video; this isn’t a complete surprise but a bit disappointing considering the specs given and the alleged low light features.
Using the low light setting just makes things grainy almost to the point of being unwatchable.
As I have used the camera more I will update my review, also if you have any questions please feel free to ask. I will answer as best I can.

Even though I am a bit disappointed in the indoor shooting quality I do like quite a bit about the camera. It is still pretty nice in the sub $400.00 range.

Compared to previous model HDR-CX110 this camera has many things that are actually much worse and a big downgrade. For once they have the same Exmor R sensor so low light is great. This one however has a terrible screen and the angle views are really bad. HDR-CX110 had an excellent screen that showed the picture you were recording like in real life. I guess Sony tried to cut costs and put a terrible screen on it. Another bad thing is Zoom noise. It wasn’t an issue on 110 but here it is actually pretty loud and you will hear it when you’re zooming. I’m returning this camera and would suggest to anyone if you can find HDR-CX110 online to buy that one instead because it’s much better than this.

16 of 16 people found the following review helpful.
An Amazing Camera
By Pablo Castro
The z5u is a serious piece of equipment. I’ve had it for a couple of weeks now, and only until today I feel I know it well enough to write a decent review.
First off, the camera looks really sleek, feels solid and very well built. Its look isn’t as metallic as the Z1, but the feel is very similar.
Of course, you can use it from day one with everything on auto, but if that’s all you’re ever gonna do, you’re better off with something much less expensive, like those tiny HD cameras that are popping up everywhere.
Speaking of day 1, your first accesory is necessarily some kind of carrying bag or hard case. Sony has a backpack that’s amazing, but costs more than 500 bucks. I got the Kata bag, which is perfect. I also got the large battery, and the cables that are not supplied with the camera (Firewire, HDMI, XLR extension). Also, I got SONY HD Master minidv tapes, as well as a 6pack of regular sony minidv tapes. After some preliminary tests, I must say the image on the HD Master tapes is noticeably better…
The main menu is easy to navigate, though it has enough levels you will get lost until you explore each a couple of times. One thing is, there are a lot of things on that menu, and the button and selecting wheel are really small… or perhaps my hands are too big? My main uses for this menu have been to select progressive or interlaced modes, and 60, 30 or 24 frames per second. Also, I’ve used it to assign all the assignable buttons under the handle, fine tune white balance temperature, set the handle zoom speed to its lowest setting (that way the handle zoom is my slow, controlled zoom, and the rear zoom is the fast one, very practical), and altering the gain setup (I left everything on 0, less grainy that way).
The range of the G lens is perfect, since it goes from a wide angle to a 20x zoom.
The 3 ND filters are great, though I’ve only really used the first one for an exterior shoot, which brought out the detail of a sunset brilliantly. The picture profiles are nice too, this is where you can make all sorts of color adjustments, including gamma, depth, wb shift, etc. Here I created a profile based on cinematone 2, only I connected it to a monitor and made some adjustments to my personal taste. These color profiles are assignable to easily accesible buttons, BTW.
Both the stereo and shotgun microphones are excellent, though I haven’t used them extensively enough to offer a more complete evaluation.
I don’t have the optional memory unit (MRC1K), but haven’t found it absolutely essential. It would be practical, but I’ve had no problems capturing HD video via firewire on Adobe PremierePro CS3, running on a Mac. I might purchase it though, but only after a nice tripod, a lighting kit, and a DOF adapter kit.
Will post an update when this camera has endured more serious, long term usage, but initially it couldn’t be better.

Thomas
I have several of the older Z1s that have received lots of run time. The HVR-Z5U fixes many of the issues we have had with the Z1s. Wider angle, longer lens, Zebra level entry on the monitor, much better management of the mic controls and other subtle improvements. And of course the slow motion feature. So over all we could have probably bought a different machine but this is one proven producer. Well worth the money.

Tough, reliable, and completely functional. Two nits, however. First, it’s heavy for its size. I finally surrendered to the fact and now use an aftermarket shoulder mount. Second, when using the MRC1K memory unit (at almost $1000 and worth it) the largest battery one can use is the NPF770. Higher capacity batteries are too large to allow the mounting of the MRC1K.
I like the memory unit for two reasons. First, it’s a back up to the tape. Second, it’s faster to dump the data from a CF card to a computer than doing from tape.

59 of 62 people found the following review helpful.
The Sony Bloggie – the “Dynamic Duo” !
By B. Colonna
The Sony Bloggie Duo is a compact camera which takes both still photos and video. It comes in several nice colors and has dual display screens.

What’s in the Box?
* The Bloggie with self-contained memory and battery, and a one year warranty.
* Wrist strap
* USB cable
* Typical consumer electronics paperwork (warranty info, Sony ad, etc.)

The box does not include a hardcopy user manual. When you plug in the Bloggi for the first time, you will be prompted to install the Bloggie software. You will see that the user manual (called the Handbook) is stored on the device. It can be accessed as needed, printed, downloaded, etc. It is about 40 double-sided printed pages.

If you are giving this as a gift, once you remove the outer box, you will find that the inner Sony box is handsome and will look nice to the recipient. It is a black cardboard type box with the Sony logo on top. It hinges open to reveal the Bloggie in a velveteen type compartment.
The Bloggie is very compact, yet carries a lot of features in its small footprint. At 4 ¼” long, a little over 2 ¼” wide and about ½” thick it is about as small as you can get for an HD camera/video recorder. It weighs about 4.9 ounces. The Bloggie is `smart’ and knows its orientation, so the display and soft menus will switch between landscape and portrait on the fly as you change how you hold the device.

The menu and keys are intuitive. The main control is a `joystick’ type which houses the main `Enter’ button and up/down/ left/right controls for various options. Above this are three buttons. From top to bottom, if holding the Bloggie landscape (or right to left if holding the device “portrait”), these buttons are: The menu button, followed by the middle button, which toggles the front display on/off, and last is the button to switch between recording/playback modes.

The 2.7″ screen on the rear is the main screen. You would use the front screen (2″) primarily for self-portraits, etc.; when on, it will mirror the main display. This is also nice if you want to watch something and share it with someone standing opposite you. Yes, you can use dual screen mode both during recording and playback! Both screens have excellent color and contrast, even in bright sunlight. The Bloggie also has an LED flash/backlight. These function well, especially considering the device’s small size. On the top is the On/Off button and shutter button, as well as the speaker and microphone; you need to avoid covering the latter when recording audio. On the bottom is the min-HDMI port and USB connector. I did not call it a USB port, because it actually unfolds from within the Duo’s body to form a built-in USB connector! All ports are completely hidden when not in use.

This brings me to the product’s one design flaw. This is NOT a serious defect, but worth mentioning. The built-in USB connector is meant to plug directly into the port on a PC, etc. In many cases, you should be able to plug in the built-in USB connector. However, if you can’t because, for example, you have a desktop PC with a recessed USB layout or ports without easy access, then you need to use the provided cable. The USB cable included by Sony is just 6 7/8″ long from end to end. If you use a laptop, you should be fine either way, as the camera can sit on the table next to your laptop, etc. But if you need to use the cable and aren’t at a table or you use a desktop PC/tower and can’t use the built-in connector, then the cable is a headache. You would have to let the camera dangle (not good!) or place it on something to raise it to keep it supported. Again, this is NOT a serious defect, but could impact someone if they have limited flexibility in accessing their USB ports or moving their PC. In those cases the cable is just way too short. Sony sells a longer one as an accessory. You can probably find a USB extender cheaper.

As for the Bloggie’s performance, you can select several photo options depending on what you want. It offers 0.4MP, 3MP, and 5MP still photos. 0.4MB would be for something where you want to save space, load files very quickly, but where quality is not a huge concern. 3MB is good for use on a PC or the internet, and the 5MB for prints. 0.4MP and 3MP use a 16:9 screen ratio, while the 5MP setting uses 4:3.

Storage-wise the Bloggie has 4GB of resident storage, which is not upgradeable. If storage is a concern, Sony also sells an 8GB Bloggie, but that model is not dual screen at this time. For the 4GB model reviewed here, it will hold slightly over 1,300 photos at 5MP. Like most cameras, the display will indicate the number of photos left.

For video, the settings are: 270 at 30fps, HD 720 at 30 fps, HD 720 at 60 fps (more suitable for sports and other fast action), and full HD 1080 at 30 fps. Files are recorded in MP4 format. Storage space for video recording will vary. For 480×270 (listed as `270′ on the Bloggie), you can store up to 8 hours of video. At 720/30 fps this drops to 2 hours, at 720/60 fps 1 hour, or 40 minutes for 1080 mode. What it amounts to is you can record in the lowest HD mode for up to 2 hours. Also, the Bloggie will allow a half hour of continuous recording for any one movie file.

The Zoom is 4x digital. In 35mm camera terms the lens would equate to a 47mm focal length. The sensor is a ¼” CMOS. The Duo has built in image stabalization. Battery life is decent and the typical considerations apply. If you use the backlight, the battery drains faster. It will typically hold out for a couple of hours.

Playback quality on the camera itself is what you might expect. Very good video, somewhat muffled audio. Playback on a PC has excellent video and audio. Through HDMI, the video and sound are both awesome. Like most electronics, the Bloggie does not come with an HDMI cable and you will need to buy an HDMI to HDMI-mini cable. At the time I got my Bloggie, Amazon was offering a cable free with a Bloggie purchase.

The software on the Bloggie is nice. You can certainly use software included with your Windows or Mac OS to manage the recordings on your Bloggie, but the software is worth a look. It gives you an interface to push your photos and video to Facebook, Youtube, etc. and also walks you through the registration for a free Sony Personal Space account which can help you easily share photos and video with family and friends through groups, notifications, etc. Obviously there are many ways to do this, but this one is included with the Bloggie if you want to give it a spin.

So, what’s the bottom line? I would not replace my higher end video recorder or digital camera with the Bloggie. For higher end recording, I need the features, flexibility, and zoom capability that a full size device provides. However, for a camera on the run, with plenty of features, the Bloggie Duo is fantastic. It is very small so you can stick it in a pocket or purse and carry it around all the time. Then you will be ready to video the kids, family, friends etc. on all those occasions where you always said “We should have brought the camcorder!” It really fits the bill for a conveniently sized, easy to use, reasonably priced camera/video recorder.

I just got it yesterday and it only took about an hour to master the set up and charging. I used the online product guide for more detailed instructions since what came in the box didn’t really explain things all that well. Every thing about the camera is pretty idiot proof, meaning that I could use it straight out of the box with out too much online help. The online guide is easy to sort through as well and I know this can probably do a lot more than what I plan on using the camera for.

The camera has a nice white finish and is easy to wipe off, it is pretty light and will easily slip into a pocket. I like the carrying strap provided although it doesn’t make a big fashion statement in ugly industrial gray. The still pictures are amazingly clear and once I figured out the flash part for lighting, I was equally impressed. I didn’t even need the instructions to figure that out. It connects directly to your computer through a dongle or direct USB connection and loads to your preset Windows’ picture file. The USB port is really cool since it just pops out after pushing a button. There are setting to allow you to load directly to You Tube or a variety or other sites, but I haven’t tried that yet but it looks easy.

Taking short movie clips is where this camera really shines and it does really well both in low light and bright sunshine. I wanted this to capture some dog film and some short interviews and the definition is really amazing. The sound is in mono but extremely clear and records at the perfect level. I ran the camera and hour and half before the battery died. I also didn’t use the light function that much since I think that really drains the battery. Overall, if you are looking to take short videos and a few still pictures, this is a great camera to own.

Neither the video or picture quality is out-of-this-world good, but I really don’t expect it to be at this price-point. Video is definitely the stronger-suit of the Bloggie. At 720p (1280×720; 30fps) the videos can look very good, though they can also be very dark in low-light conditions (and the built-in light doesn’t help a whole lot, unless you like shadows). The Bloggie also has image stabilization, which is an almost necessary feature for this type of camera. Videos definitely look better when they’re not shaking everywhere.

As a still photo camera, the Bloggie isn’t quite as useful. Still photos have been dark and grainy most of the times that I’ve used it. Low-light makes it worse, I’ve never been able to get any particularly good photos out of it. It’s decent enough to take some snapshots here and there, but this won’t be replacing your dedicated still camera.

The hardware itself feels solid, although a textured surface might have been a better choice than the smooth, shiny finish. The only part I don’t feel comfortable about is the pop-out USB connector. You’ll probably want to use a USB extension cable with this (a very short one is included with the Bloggie, although if you’re plugging it directly into a laptop sitting on a surface, it works, although it takes a good bit of pull to get it out of the USB port). It’s convenient, but doesn’t feel particularly durable.

As for the much touted software that makes using your Bloggie easier, I have to ask why it’s even necessary. Was it really so hard to copy and paste your photos into folders or to upload them to whatever photo services you use? The Bloggie software is a bit bloated for what it is and doesn’t perform particularly well (and needs to update itself as soon as you install it). I’ve never been a fan of Sony’s software for its PC peripherals, and the Bloggie software doesn’t change that. It does what it’s supposed to do, but a lot of its touted functionality are in features I’ll never use. I might be an old fogey that doesn’t “get” the new “social media,” but I still don’t want to leave the management and uploading of my photos and videos up to an application, especially with Sony’s penchant for changing and removing features in their software packages.

Overall, I like the camera. It feels solid and takes decent video. The software is a take-it-or-leave-it affair, and I guess I should be thankful that Sony at least left me the option to still be able to navigate to the photo and video folders and be able to copy, cut, paste and delete as I see fit.
